Positional Sleep Therapy: Reduce Snoring & Improve Sleep
What is Positional Sleep Therapy?
Positional Sleep Therapy is a simple and effective way to improve sleep quality by changing your sleeping position. It is mainly used for people who snore or have Positional Obstructive Sleep Apnoea (POSA)—a condition where breathing is impacted when sleeping on the back.
A positional therapy device, such as the Night Shift, helps train the body to sleep on its side by using gentle vibrations whenever the wearer rolls onto their back. For POSA, since snoring and OSA happen in the supine position, by avoiding the supine position, wearers can improve sleep and reduce snoring or breathing interruptions.
Doctors often recommend positional therapy for people with:
✔️ Snoring that worsens when lying on the back
✔️ Mild to moderate obstructive sleep Apnoea (POSA)
✔️ Poor sleep quality due to frequent waking at night
✔️ Daytime fatigue caused by disrupted sleep.
How Does Positional Sleep Therapy Work?
The Night Shift device is a lightweight, wearable device that helps encourage side-sleeping. It works in three simple steps:
Worn on the neck or chest – The device is attached around your neck or chest before bedtime.
Monitors sleep position – It detects when you roll onto your back while sleeping.
Vibrates to encourage repositioning – If you sleep on your back for too long, the device gently vibrates. The vibration starts softly and gradually increases until you roll onto your side.
At first, the vibrations will wake you up, but over time, your body will learn to respond without waking up. This training effect helps many users naturally avoid sleeping on their backs, leading to long-term improvement in sleep quality.
What Does Positional Sleep Therapy Tell Me About My Sleep?
The Night Shift device tracks several important sleep details, including:
Total sleep time – How long you actually sleep each night.
Snoring levels – Whether and how much you snore while sleeping.
Sleeping position – How much time you spend on your back, side, or stomach.
Response to vibrations – How long you take to respond to the device.
This information is recorded and sent to your doctor for review. It helps them understand how your sleep position affects your breathing, snoring, and sleep quality. Based on the results, they can recommend further treatment or adjustments to improve your sleep.

FAQs
-
Positional Therapy reduces the effects of Positional Obstructive Sleep Apnoea (POSA) and snoring by keeping the sleeper out of the supine position.
The device is worn around the neck or chest during sleep, and it monitors which position the patient is sleeping in and level of snoring. If the patient rolls into the supine position, the device will deliver a subtle vibration, slowly increasing in intensity until the patient changes position. Through continual use patients gradually become trained to avoid sleeping in the supine position.
The clinical data in these reports includes sleep time, snoring level, sleeping position, and frequency/intensity of response.

We use the Night Shift Device from Advanced Brain Monitoring. It is a simple, non-invasive treatment option for positional sleep apnoea. Night Shift is worn around the neck or the chest and uses vibrotactile (it vibrates) feedback to discourage supine sleep and treat mild to moderate sleep apnoea and positional snoring.
The Night Shift Device is clinically validated for the treatment of Positional Sleep Apnoea.

Your Night Shift trial device is pre-programmed and ready to use. Simply:
1. Turn on the device using the button on the side. It should vibrate 1-3 times and show a green or yellow light (this means the battery is charged and ready for the night).
2. Wear it around your neck or chest using the provided strap. Adjust it so it’s snug but comfortable—you should be able to fit one finger under the strap.
3. The device will automatically detect your sleep position and vibrate if you roll onto your back.
4. Continue using the device every night for 10 nights during the trial.
-
The device starts with a gentle vibration if you roll onto your back. If you don’t change position, the vibration will increase in intensity until you move. This helps train your body to sleep on its side.
For the first few nights, the vibration will wake you up, but over time, your body will respond automatically without waking up fully.
-
You should wear the Night Shift device for 10 consecutive nights as part of your trial.
-
Try to keep the device on all night. If it becomes uncomfortable, you can adjust the strap for a better fit.
-
Yes. The battery lasts about 3 nights per charge.
When turning on the device, it will vibrate 1-3 times and blink green 1-3 times, showing how many nights of battery are left.
If the battery is low, charge it for about 6 hours using the included USB cable.
A solid green light means it is charging. When the light turns off, the device is fully charged.
